James Gillray the British political cartoonist caricaturist and printmaker was one of the original satirists whose style is still very influential in contemporary illustrators works. i particularly like the sillyness of his ludicrous witty drawings. His sense of humour really comes through his pictures. his long gangley limbs and drawn out faces make the subjects look ridiculous, letting the view laugh and bringing the subject down to the level of the viewer. This was especially effective in the days Gillray was drawing as the world was not as filled with images as it is today. seeing an 'all powerful' monarch or oligarch ridiculed removes the fear and humanises them. thus making satirical cartoons very popular and accessible.
